Calgary Stampede’s second weekend kicked off in style, with another solid attendance number Friday, as they look to rope a new all-time record.
The weather was rather mild Friday, compared with earlier in the week, giving revelers a respite from the sun on the blacktop on the Calgary Stampede grounds. Things continue to look good for the weekend, with only a marginal chain of a rain shower.
That led to 134,157 people coming through the gates, pushing the eight-day total to 1,174,880. Last year, there was 1,384,632 guests, and the all-time record, set in 2012, was 1,409,371. Things continued to tighten up at the top of the chuckwagon standings with only one more race to decide who gets to run for the Calgary Stampede’s Cowboys Rangeland Derby title on Sunday.
Chad Fike, who had been leading for half of the week, hit penalty trouble on Friday night, pushing him out of the top 3. That left the door open for Chanse Vigen and Jason Glass to extend their hold on first and second, with Layne MacGillivary climbing into the third spot.
Vigen had the top run of Friday night, with a run time of 1:10.81. Glass was less than four-tenths behind, with a time of 1:11.22. Overall, that puts Vigen in the lead by the same four-tenths. Full chuckwagon results can be found here.
The Calgary Stampede rodeo saw a bunch of exceptional performances by Canadian cowboys, starting with Sherwood Park’s Kody Lamb, who scored an 86 aboard Oney to nab third-place cash, only two points behind Orin Larsen, from Inglis, Manitoba.
Ben Anderson from Rocky Mountain House tied with Bruno Kade for top spot in saddle bronc, with Wildwood, Alberta’s Logan Hay finishing fourth.
Ty Miller from Wainwright, Alberta, only trailed the leader, Tyler Pearson, by three-tenths in steer wrestling, cashing in on a $5,500 payday. Full rodeo results can be found here.
Saturday on the Stampede grounds
Look, if the Jonas Brothers revival isn’t enough to bring you down to the Calgary Stampede, we don’t know what is. You might still be able to snag a seat if you want.
If the Jonas Brothers don’t move you, then maybe the Calgary Stampede’s Cowboy Up Challenge will. It tests competitors in a variety of skills with their horses. You can watch the competition tonight and tomorrow with the pre-show starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Nutrien Event Centre.
You can always check out the Stampede Wine Cellar, which is a relatively new addition to the Calgary Stampede. We’ve written about it here before, and it gives you something a little different than your typical Stampede fare.
Of course, if the Jonas Brothers don’t float your musical boat, there’s plenty for your listening enjoyment on the Stampede grounds.
Nashville North has Jackson Dean starting at 10 p.m. Saturday night. The Coca-Cola stage has a full slate on Saturday, starting with Cab’ral at 12:30 p.m., Asad Khan at 1:45, Anabel Englund at 7:45, Good Times Ahead at 8:15, Dillon Francis at 9:05, and electronic dance music producer and DJ, Alison Wonderland at 10:15 p.m.
The Big Four Roadhouse has CeeLo Green at 10:30 p.m.
